Is Your Almería Tap Water Safe? Here’s What the Nitrate Data Actually Says

If you live in Almería and you've wondered whether your tap water is safe to drink, you are not alone. Right now, there are two towns in the province that have recorded nitrate readings above the legal level, and 11 more that are close to it.

The Short Version

According to Spain's official water-monitoring system, two Almería municipalities, Huércal-Overa and Lubrín, have networks whose latest published SINAC readings indicate the drinking water exceeds the legal nitrate limit. A further 11 towns sit just below that line, in a category officials call a 'critical point'. And the concerning thing is that nitrates do not show up in water as a colour change, smell or taste, so householders would have absolutely no idea of their presence. That is a problem.

Where Does This Information Come From?

Every water supplier in Spain reports nitrate readings to SINAC, the National Water Consumptions Information Systems run by the Ministry of Health. Independent data outlet DATADISTA have a free, searchable tool that pulls information directly from SINAC and organises it by town. Below is an example of the information for Lubrín.

Spain's legal maximum for nitrates in drinking water is 50 mg/l. Above that, water is officially unfit for consumption.

Towns On The Watch List

Whilst Lubín and Huércal-Overa are reported as over the limit, a further 11 towns, shown as orange dots on the map below, are on the 'critical point':

  1. Adra

  2. Chirivel

  3. La Mojonera

  4. Lucainena de las Torres

  5. Purchena

  6. Turre

  7. Turrillas

  8. Vélez-Blanco

  9. Vélez-Rubio

  10. Vera

  11. Viator

Why You Should Care, Even If Your Town Isn't On The List

You can't taste it. You can't smell it. You can't see it. Nitrates have no effect on how your water looks or tastes. A glass of clean water and a glass of contaminated water will appear identical to your senses. The only way to know is to test.

'Legal' was set for a different era. The 50 mg/l limit dates back to 1962 and was designed to prevent a rare infant illness called methemoglobinemia ('blue baby syndrome'). Modern research points to risks starting well below that 50 mg/l level. The science-recommended precautionary threshold for nitrates in drinking water is just 6 mg/l - over eight times stricter than today's legal maximum.

A town-wide reading isn't your reading. Municipal data reflects an average or worst-case across the whole water network. It says nothing about your specific pipework, your position on the supply line or whether you're on a private well or borehole - all things which change what's actually coming out of your tap.

Bottom line: Is Almería tap water safe to drink isn't a yes or no question. It's a 'test and find out' question.

Where Do Nitrates in Almería's Water Come From?

One cause stands out: agriculture. Nitrates are one of the most common groundwater pollutants across Europe, driven overwhelmingly by fertilisers and livestock waste run-off seeping down through the soil and into water aquifers.

Almería is more exposed than most places. The province's combination of intensive agriculture and heavy reliance on borehole and well water, rather than just mains supply, puts it at higher risk of nitrate contamination than other parts of Spain.

So What Can You Do About It?

Your filter jug won't solve it. A basic jug or off-the-shelf carbon cartridge is built to improve the taste of water and remove chlorine. It is not designed to remove nitrates. Full stop.

Testing is the only answer. Our free 24-point water test checks your supply against Spanish government criteria, including nitrates, so you get a result specific to your property and not a town-wide average.

If you need it, we can fix it. If the nitrate levels warrant it, our UNE 149101-certified Reverse Osmosis systems remove up to 99% of dissolved contaminants, nitrates included.

No pressure. No obligation. Just a clear picture of what's coming out of your tap so that you're informed, and can act if you wish to.
