WATER FILTERS
Why Filter Water?
Water filters remove impurities and contaminants that can make their way into the water supply in its journey from treatment plant to tap, as well as the chemicals that water companies deliberately add to water in order to kill bacteria. Filtered drinking water is therefore purer and generally tastier than tap water - it's like bottled water on demand in your house
The Spanish government estimate that 99.5% of tap water is drinkable, however safe does not always mean pleasant to drink and its the taste of added chemicals such as chlorine that often drives people in Spain to buy more environmentally damaging and unsafe bottled water. Additionally, houses in the campo often have private water supplies through bore holes where water may be highly mineralised or harbour bacteria
OUR WATER FILTERS
Pure water, straight from the tap
All our water filters are reverse osmosis, direct flow machines
What is reverse osmosis?
Simply put, reverse osmosis is a purification process where water is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane that separates out the water molecules from other substances such as chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and bacteria. It is the most efficient method of purifying water and used on an industrial scale by governments and water companies to turn salt and other types of water into 'potable' (drinking) water. Reverse osmosis water filters remove viruses and bacteria, pharmaceuticals, lead, chlorine and limescale whereas carbon-based devices, such as filter jugs, simply improve the taste and odour of water but do not remove all of the harmful elements within it
What is direct flow?
If your water filter is direct flow, it means that you receive the water on demand and at a strong flow-rate from a machine that is compact in size with an in-built pump, unlike indirect flow filters which store the filtered water in a buffer tank until it's needed with the result that the flow rate is slower, the amount of water available immediately is limited to the amount held in the buffer tank and the machine is larger, taking up more precious kitchen cupboard space

BOTTLED WATER
-
10 million bottles of water are consumed in Spain every day (20,000 bottles are used every second globally)
-
60.5% of people in Spain drink bottled water
-
6-7 times more water than the bottle holds is used in the manufacturing of it
-
National Geographic estimates that if you filled a water bottle to 25% that is equivalent to how much crude oil is used in the production process
-
Only one fifth of plastic water bottles get recycled; the rest end up in landfill or our oceans
-
A plastic water bottles takes 450 years to disintegrate
-
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health estimates that packaged water is 3,500 times more polluting than tap water
-
On average, the cheapest supermarket bottled water is 131 times more expensive per litre than tap water
TAP WATER
-
Chlorine is added to water during treatment to kill bacteria. It is safe, but has an unpleasant swimming pool smell and taste
-
Bacteria can enter your water supply between treatment centre and home. Coliform bacteria such as E.coli can cause gastro-intestinal problems in high risk groups such as children, the elderly or medically vulnerable
-
Pesticides such as metaldehyde, commonly used by farmers and gardeners, can enter the water system
-
Areas with intensive agricultural and livestock farming put nitrates into the ground water. Under Spanish law, tap water must not exceed a nitrate level of 50mg per litre but regional water tests regularly find levels that exceed the legal limit
