When a homeowner in Cabrera contacted us about a problem with stubborn limescale, we began the way we always do, by visiting the property to assess exactly what treatment was needed and any fitting challenges. The outcome? A discreet installation of a Kinetico water softener that combated the extreme hard water in Almería without the need for a separate drinking-water tap.
In this instance, the customer didn’t need a water filter fitted because the issue was hardness (limescale), and not broader contamination. A tailored softener solution was the most appropriate, and cost-effective, option.
The Stop Tap Challenge
In British houses, the water stop tap is most commonly located underneath the kitchen sink, or under the stairs. However in most houses in Almería, the stop taps are usually to be found outside the property, and sometimes there can even be two of them - one on the street, and another on an exterior wall of the house.
A water softener must sit as close as possible to the incoming mains, which means that outdoor installs in Almería houses are the most common scenario. This ensures that softened water gets to every branch before it splits off to taps, appliances and showers. Siting the softener next to the mains input is essential for whole-house limescale protection and extends the life of boilers, central heating systems and white goods such as washing machines and dishwashers.
Why Drainage is Often a Problem
All water softeners discharge waste water, and that means that a reliable drain point is needed close to the unit. Unfortunately, the reality is that it’s rare to find a drain next to the outside stop tap. Budget water softeners require power, so you’re forced to install them near an electrical outlet and an outside drain, which can limit options and create unsightly runs of exposed pipe.
This is where the Kinetico water softeners we are proud to supply and install stand out.
Why Kinetico is the Outdoor Install Winner
As the name implies, our Kinetico water softeners are powered by kinetic energy. Like water mills, the Kinetico uses the flow of the water going through to power it - so no power socket required! That ancient, yet eternally simple technology instantly unlocks more installation locations outside, protects you from power-cuts and simplifies outdoor fit-outs in Almería properties.
As a bonus, Kinetico’s design allows us to pump the waste water uphill if needed - something that’s massively helpful if the nearest drain is on the opposite side of the house.
Cabrera Case Study: Discreet and Durable
Brief: Fit a softener for whole-house limescale control; no drinking water filter required.
Challenges:
Water mains inlet located outside.
Drain located on the opposite side of the house from the water inlet.
Need to maintain a clutter-free facade without messy runs of visible pipework.
No convenient power supply outside.
Our Solution:
We installed a Kinetico softener inside an existing outdoor enclosure next to the incoming water mains - exactly where it needed to be for whole-house coverage. No electricity needed with our units so no problem there!

The drain had to run to the other side of the house. We ran it at ground level, cutting a slim channel into the render at the base of the external walls and passing under the front-door steps.
Lastly, we concealed the drain with matching skirting tiles, making the pipe virtually invisible. Unless you know it’s there, you’d never spot it!
Outcome:
A robust (10-year warranty), low-maintenance whole-house water softener solution that protects the homeowner’s boilers, appliances, bathrooms and kitchens from limescale Added bonus - the soft water also protects from dry skin and helps with eczema.
A tidy exterior - no unsightly exposed pipework - and a finish that complements the property’s look and feel.
No drinking water filter needed, the solution was tailored to the customer’s specific problem.

When You Do - And Don’t - Need a Water Filter
It’s not the case that every home needs a water softener and a water filter. A water softener targets hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium), which cause limescale whereas a water filter addresses other contaminants such as heavy metals, nitrates and pesticides, as well as taste and odour issues in drinking water.
In Cabrera, we confirmed the customer’s main issue was limescale, so we recommended softening only. If future circumstances change - new taste issues for instance - we can add an under-sink drinking water filter later. The right product at the right time.
